Old Hotmail Accounts Being Used as Spam Traps

Email Delivery: Inactive Email Recipients

If your sign up on Microsoft's Smart Network Data Services you may have noticed recently your getting more spam trap hit's. Many clients never use to get spam trap hit's they were very careful, but now all the sudden they are. What has happened? It seems as though Microsoft has begun to use old email accounts as spam trap addresses. Keep in mind these canceled addresses never return as bounces so you have no opportunity to remove them for that reason. Richi Jennings, an analyst at Ferris Research, claimed that, after a year of disuse, Microsoft may use old Hotmail accounts as spam traps.

So what do you do? You need to be proactive! Remove addresses from your list that do not open or click through an email link in your emails. You'll have to come up with your own metrics to determine when an email is not active enough with your emails. It will depend on the volume of email you send. If you send monthly emails and get no interaction from an email six times in a row, maybe that email recipient is no longer a live reader. One thing is sure, inactive email recipients need to be removed before twelve inactive sends or you may hit a spam trap at hotmail.
